A Short History of El Zagal Temple

El Zagal Temple, which covers southern North Dakota and part of the northwest area of Minnesota, was founded on December 14, 1889.  El Zagal received its charter on June 23, 1890.  It was the 51st Temple to have received a charter.  Its is the home of the second oldest unit in all of Shrinedom, the Arab Patrol.

El Zagal's first Potentate was Leonard Rose.  Its first class consisted of 34 candidates.  Since that time El Zagal has installed three additional Temples; Aberdeen, South Dakota; Winnipeg, Manitoba; and Grand Forks, North Dakota.

El Zagal has had two Past Potentate who have been elected to the very respected position of Imperial Potentate:

  • Frank Treat was Imperial Potentate from 1911 to 1912.

  • Alfred G. Arvold was Imperial Potentate in 1944.

The Imperial Potentate is the individual who governs Shrinedom for the whole United States.  This includes over 525,000 members.

El Zagal is very proud of its membership and clubhouse.  Please take sometime to learn more about our organization.
